Meet Minneapolis president Melvin Tennant, Mayor R.T. Rybak and a pair of volleyball tournament players.

Meet Minneapolis announced today that the 2014 USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships will be held at the Minneapolis Convention Center. According to Meet Minneapolis president Melvin Tennant, the event will be the largest held in the Twin Cities since the 2008 Republican National Convention.

“I expect this will use wildly fewer police resources,” joked Mayor R.T. Rybak.

The event will be held June 25 – July 2, 2014 and is expected to draw 30,000 attendees and fill over 54,000 room nights across 65 hotels. The tournament is projected to generate an economic impact of over $60 million, including $106,000 in local taxes. The economic impact is not limited to Minneapolis. Lodging is pre-booked in Minneapolis, St. Paul and a dozen additional Metro area cities.
